Even if you could go on someone else's nickel? Because that's been my advice for a long time--if you can get someone else to pay for most/all of it (and they wouldn't just give you the cash instead) and you can get into a good enough school, then fine. Otherwise, no way.

You and I live in different worlds, as this never even occurred to me. I suppose I would accept $150k to $250k if someone was just going to hand it to me, yes.

once you see kids going to college that you think you need to advise what they might study (they may not want your advice of course) you may find that there aren't clear "good" paths (I hope by the time you get to that point some clear paths are there). then when they graduate with a degree in ___ they have limited options. LS is still default as something that might be okay in 3 years.

I mean a kid has to do something, they can't just say No and there are few, if any, clear solid options right now.

There are scholarships at many, many LS. Not that I got one, nor was I having someone else pay for me, tho you and I both know many whose parents were (and it looks like Hank may be adding to the count of those we "know").

I'm sending this article to my cousin's kid who wants to go to law school despite several big red flags (middling undergrad grades, poor LSAT scores over 3 attempts, can only get into the area night law school, doesn't have a lot of drive).

He could surprise everyone and have a knack for the law but I wouldn't go into huge debt on the chance this might happen. When he got out of college, I told him to get a job -- any job -- in a law firm so he can see what practicing law is really like but he didn't take that advice so I don't expect him to take the "don't go to law school" advice either.

Absofuckinglutely. Unless you are paying for HLS.

I had a chance to go to a 2d tier LS for free. Turns out they tought you how to hit the ground running, tune in the police scanner and shove a retainer in someone's face just like the education I paid 90k for.

The one consistent thing I see about people who go to law school is that they all seem to ask for advice but never take it.

I've managed to talk two out of it. One, to my great surprise, dropped out after the first semester. I know several people who hated it the second they got there, but for some stupid pride reason decided to stick it through to the end. They are now miserable lawyers.

When I briefly taught first-years, I tried talking a few people into dropping out. Didn't work....
