Jeebus. It's like you don't remember when Hornung got in trouble with the Dome: "We can't stay as strict as we are as far as the academic structure is concerned because we've got to get the black athletes. We must get the black athletes if we're going to compete."

The problem ND has is that, as the Dome responded in subtext, if you're "Jalen Rose" and have options, why would you choose to spend four years in South Bend, on a Catholic (ie, "no fun" rep) campus, playing for a team with limited b-ball rep? Aren't there 20+ other schools that are more likely destinations, unless you're catholic or related to a Domer?

I said part of the reason he might not recruit them is his perception that they wouldn't fit in there. It was really just a question about whether it was all about a "coachability" thing or if there could be other things going on in his thought process. I, like TM, doubt he recruits many poor inner city black kids. But I guess we don't know for sure.
