Use brackets for quotes; parens for emphasis in text.

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by the suburbs, stuffed
hysterical naked,
dragging themselves through the Mall of America at dusk looking for an American doll,
angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the
starry Grand Caravan in the machinery of night,
whom wealth and khakied and hollow-eyed and medicated sat up working in the
supernatural darkness of glass towered offices floating across the tops of
cities contemplating angsty chick music....

I am actually somewhat relieved that I was able to have a daughter who has grandparents for over eight years before I learned about the cruise, and am very relieved that, to my knowledge, she is unaware of this cruise. The girls in the carpool this morning spent the entire ride to theater camp poring over the latest American Girl Doll catalogue. In case you don't know what an American Girl Doll is, it is a doll that costs $100, which makes it way more special than regular dolls, which is why it is so expensive. The store at the Mall of America is devoted exclusively to these dolls and their doll paraphernalia, and you can dress up in a matching outfit with your doll and take your doll out to tea there, or take her to the hair salon, or do other things that make my brain hurt to think about. The conversation consisted of things like, "That's Elizabeth. She's English but she's going to the doll archives soon.", and "Did you know that you can get a braces set for your doll? They tell you to take care of your doll but when they pierce her ears they really just drill holes in her ears.", and "I have a look-alike doll, too, but mine is blonde because it had been a long time since my grandparents had seen me." Shortly after dropping the girls off, I realized that I might have actually just been a passive participant in a Eugene Ionesco play called "Crise de l'Age Mur." I don't know what they are teaching these kids at this theater camp, but their performance in the car was nothing short of brilliant. Anyhoo, I'm totally still an edgy rocker type dude. Really. NotBob, got any music recs for me?
My daughter went through that phase. She wanted one of the dolls with a backstory. I looked into it and the only black doll in that category is a slave, so that shit ended fast. My daughter got over it in roughly 13 mins.

I wrote the company a what-the-fuck letter and they sent me a very defensive "Oprah approved the black doll's history" response (as if (i) she speaks for all black people or (ii) her opinion fucking means anything at all to me).

Re: Towards A Virtual Williamsburg!

We all know that in Philadelphia it's worth fifty bucks. The question that shall be explored by this paper is "Why?"

So, yes, it might be worth it to me as long as I think we are compatible friends. I don't really know if that is the case, because there are a few ways in which he is WAY too suburban for me. Things that make me unlikely to want to pursue something more, but he could be a fun guy to watch football with on Sundays or play poker with. Do things that my girlfriends don't really do. I don't know... Crazy?
Why not just hang out with him like a friend, and should you feel the need to get some, move it in that direction.

There's a name for this sort of friends with occasional sex arrangement, I believe, but it escapes me.

Friend or Relationship is a false choice. Friend You Can Fuck or Friend You Don't is a much better, and more realistic one. I've done it a couple times with decent success, as I'm sure have half the people here. And it only works in situations exactly like you've described - where there's no spark from either side, but both people like hanging out with each other.

The Sundays doing "Wild Horses" is excellent. It'll even carry a Budweiser commercial. Not enough to cause me to buy Budweiser. But enough to stay my Tivo fast-forward finger.

Who isn't "ready" to start dating again? The need for this fiction is bizarre. If you meet someone and there's chemistry, the need to be "ready," if there really ever is one, evaporates.

I'm married and if I find myself talking to a woman and notice there's strong chemistry, I'm feeling quite "ready." And though I'd never cheat, if this woman is hot and the back and forth is electric (you know the mutual vibe I'm referencing), I'm so ready I find myself cursing the lack of progressiveness in modern Western mores staying me from doing what I'm thinking about doing, and have a pretty good idea she's thought about doing.

"Ready" is an over-thinker's concept.

This paper is the one that explains why the Rochefoucauld is worth only $50.

ETA: I'm 10 minutes in, and while I've heard memorable excerpts that continue to amuse me 30+ years later, I've yet to hear anything that actually informs me as to whether massive shorting of futures positions, followed by covering after the market crashes, could ever work. Heck, George Soros did so much with British pounds.

My belief is yes, but the CFTC would be all over your ass if you did it based on intercepting a confidential crop report.

I think you are confusing "ready to start dating" and "ready to start fucking."
