What is happening? FIFA was where a few South American teams challenged the traditional European powers, right? Italy loses to Costa Rica? Germany is tied by Ghana? Did France have some problem with some typical also ran? I don't understand.

For you, sure. Why not?

I'm tempted to add Cornell to the list, for no reason other than that it's Cornell.

(1) No weak teams at this World Cup, except Honduras.

(2) Seems like European teams are underperforming.

European teams are coming off their seasons, whereas most leagues in this hemisphere are in the middle of theirs. Lots of injuries and some exhaustion on the European teams. 7 of the starters in Spain, for example, had just come off the Champions League final three weeks before the World Cup started. Over half of Spain's team was in the semis. Portugal and Germany have had injury issues as well. Messi was hurt mid season, so he had some time off then. Suarez is coming off ACL surgery, which is why he didn't play Uruguay's first game. Gigi Buffon missed Italy's first game to injury.

Most of the South American teams have players who are in those European leagues (Messi, Naymar, Suarez, Valencia for Ecuador, etc.), but the whole team isn't in Europe. There aren't that many European players who haven't just finished 9 months straight of competition.

So we're about to see a grueling, defensive, nil-nil draw in Germany/US, right?

Both teams like to attack and are suspect defensively, so I doubt it.

Wasn't it a mistake for the us to attack in the last minutes yesterday? I believe I'd have just played "keep away" and tried to run clock.

It was a mistake for Bradley to miss the pass.

It was a mistake for Cameron to pass to a wide open Nani. It was a mistake to let Portugal have point blank shots on Howard. Mistakes were made. All that being said, as brutal as the last 30 seconds were, we approach game 3 with 4 points, second in the group, and a goal differential that could put us through, even with a loss. If you had told me that would be the case a week ago, I would have taken that no problem.

15 minutes is a lot of keep away.

I meant in the last 2 minutes (although no one knows how much extra time there is so that makes it difficult to know when in the last few minutes). You're not helping us learn about the sport by being unkind.

In hockey at the end a team down 1 throws everything into offense. I would assume the same happens in soccer. So then we should hang back a bit, not rush all our guys up.

It might help if the US team brought in some people that know basic US sports strategy for moments like that; a hockey coach say. Make sense?
