I wrote this about officiating while I was planning my own ceremony:
http://texaslawchick.livejournal.com/1053248.html I think most of it still stands, except we never had a love poem. If we'd had a poem, knowing our officiant it was likely going to be Rumi. I think our ceremony clocked in at 12 minutes.
I loathe Corinthians I, and I roll my eyes at every wedding where it's recited. If Bible is needed for some reason, go to the Song of Solomon. There's some sexy stuff in there.
This was our ceremony. Crib at will:
Introduction
Honored guests, We gather here today to participate in the union of RT and Graham. This is a profound act of love, faith, and courage. It is with great joy that I invite you all to participate in this ceremony.
Please take a minute to look around you at the others gathered here. We are the friends and family of RT and Graham. We are their community.
A community’s power is strong. It is our job to celebrate their relationship in good times and to bolster it during times of challenge. If you accept this important responsibility to support this union, please respond by saying “I will” “I will”
The meeting
[she talked about being there when we met. She'd been friends with us individually before we hooked up at Burning Man.]
Marriage Significance
From that magical beginning we have now come to this day. A day to create a ceremony to bind these two in love. In many ways, a marriage ceremony is fleeting. For yesterday, you were a man and a woman deeply in love; tomorrow, you will be a man and a woman deeply in love. But something will happen here today; something mysterious and sacred and unexplainable.
Joining your lives in partnership is an intentional decision, made with mutual respect and with a sense of reverence.
For many, marriage represents the ultimate intimacy between a man and a woman. But it is also something of a contradiction: this joining as one also affirms and strengthens the individuality of each partner.
In giving yourself freely to each other, you discover your freedom. As you grow together, so will each of you grow individually. Your commitment frees you to be who you really are. This is the blessing intimacy allows when respect and reverence characterize your decision to marry.
For in loving one another, you will be called in many unanticipated ways to help your partner to become all she or he can become. RT and Graham I have been a witness to this type of love in your relationship, and today we use this ceremony to confirm your love for on e another.
[There was a rose ceremony involving our mothers after this part.]
You have prepared vows to express your love and commitment to one another.
Vows
[we pulled out our phones and read our vows. A friend texted us in the middle of Graham's.]
Ring exchange
And now the rings! These rings made of metals and gems are only objects, We prescribe the their meaning. These rings will be a very special reminder for you of this day. Please exchange your rings.
I DOs
Now for the most important part DO you? Do you?
