Re: No Faith in the Moral Standards of the Players as a Group

In Nashville for a (4 week) trial and just saw a sign posted to a pole just off Vanderbilt's campus that says "Melt Banana with Torche and Hot Nerds July 20".

I saw this little defense of (some) trolling and thought of you:

Not that I have any particular objection to trolling if it is done well. Two of the obvious implications of the Mercier-Sperber research are that (a) the distinction between trolling and reasoned argument is at best murky, and (b) there is considerable heuristic value to really well executed and appropriately targeted trolling (which, it is to work properly, requires an ability to get inside the head of the trolling’s target and to understand how he or she reasons). As I have noted on this blog, Socrates was an obvious troll. Max Weber’s advice to professors in Wissenschaft als Beruf can plausibly be interpreted as ‘don’t try to convince your students of your inward beliefs; just troll the hell out of their own to unsettle them in useful ways.’
So carry on, but maybe set your sights a little higher. If you were waiting at a bus stop, would you get on just any bus that came along?

as I believe you know, I am a law professor and we all had to read Weber. I think you are intellectually lazy, but possessing reasoning ability. So i troll you as a professor trying to get you to be better. Contrast how I troll the dull normal, e.g. Sidd or GGG, where I am simply pushing the buttons of a machine whose software os 20 years out of date.

My vague recollection says our temp doc reviewers did get overtime though.

In other stories, I had to read a court opinion for work the other day. Clearly, something went wrong somewhere for the chain of events to end up there. Meanwhile, the person I was talking to was unfamiliar with concept that's been a part of federal agency guidance in our area for at least two decades. Huh.

We aren't in a post-Trump world.

I'm sorry, Wonk.

In other news, Plymouth Gin works well in both a Tom Collins and the old reliable G&T (with a lemon - not lime - wedge).

Also, "The Last Hurrah" is better as a book, but John Ford made a pretty good movie out of it, starring Spencer Tracy as Frank Skeffington. Thanks, TMC on demand.

Finally, I recently discovered that "The Rockford Files" is on Netflix. I only wish I was half as cool as my avatar.

Carry on.
