Mardi Gras is around 2/9 so be careful unless you want to pay more for hotels and see women flashing their tits.

I've been several times for the Heritage and Jazz Fest, though that was quite a while ago. One cool thing we did was spend a night at Nottaway Plantation, a beautifully maintained antebellum plantation where you can tour the mansion, spend the night and dine at a really good restaurant right on the grounds. It's in White Castle. if you're going to spend any time in the Lafayette/New Iberia area, I'd strongly recommend it. I also really enjoyed Avery Island, which includes the Tabasco tour and also a cool nature preserve (but watch out for gators!). One more is Jefferson Island in New Iberia, where you can tour the Joseph Jefferson mansion and the Rip Van Winkle Gardens, and learn about the disappearing lake (where an oil rig drilled through a salt dome in the lake floor and the entire lake drained out, like pulling the plug out of the bathroom drain).

Mardi gras is a lot of fun especially if you are 22 and in a rock band.

Speaking of plantations, I guess the Whitney Plantation is about 35 miles west of NO, at least according to the NYT.

Similarly, I am continuing my exploration of U.S. cities with Dallas next month and would appreciate any advice on neighborhoods to stay in, restaurants, bars and things to do. Thanks in advance.

I haven't been back to Dallas in a few years, but I used to go back all the time. I might make a trip there this spring...

Here are some thoughts (not entirely current intel):

1. When I lived there, Knox Henderson and Uptown were the main areas to go out/stay close to downtown. After I left, the action moved across the highway to the Henderson side of Knox Henderson. I used to like Hotel Zaza. In fact I think you (Less) and I met for drinks there once. Don't stay at the W. It's a terrible scene (or at least it used to be). Just make sure you stay within a couple of miles of downtown...

2. Areas south of downtown have been developed since I left. I have friends who own a restaurant in a loft building on the south side of downtown called Southside on Lamar (their restaurant is called Full Circle Tavern, but I've never been -- if you go, ask for Lara or Jennifer and tell them you're my friend). I think there's other new stuff going in Bishop Arts District on the south side.

3. A new park was developed in the downtown arts district over the highway that cuts through downtown. I've heard good things about the new green space and there are good museums all around that -- Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas Museum of Art.

4. I'm not a good person to ask about BBQ joints, as I don't eat meat, but I can ask around if you want BBQ advice... There's an old school cheap greasy BBQ place somewhere in the Oak Lawn area near 35W, but I don't remember the name.

5. Don't go to the suburbs. You can drive north in Dallas to around White Rock Lake, but avoid Addison/Plano and the entire area between Dallas and Fort Worth at all costs.

6. Fort Worth stockyards can be fun and the Kimbell Museum in Ft Worth has a great collection (I've heard).

If I hear anything more current re: hot restaurants or hotels, I'll let you know...
