Gold Toe Over the Calf Windsor Wool. Buy 10 in black, 5 in light gray, 3 in brown. No need for the navy blue; the black works with navy suits.
A hideous look is the bare shin topping off a short, thin sock.

Flashy socks are ok for some but not for me.

Socks on a weekend seems wrong.

And on weekends, I disagree with Fraiser's father, where I presume he adhered to his personal credo of "semper ubi sub ubi." |

What kind of socks are you wearing? I don't find socks uncomfortable at all. And in the summer, they're no more too hot than any other piece of clothing you're wearing. Do you have excessive foot sweat or something? If you do, I would imagine not wearing socks would be an even more disgusting experience.

They're not supposed to. They're socks.

Me either. Seems like a weird way to get attention, but it doesn't bother me when other people do it.

This look is not for me, but for some people it works very well. I can't explain what it is that makes it work, so I won't try. But, yeah. It's rare.

Someone telling you "Being naked except for socks isn't a sexy look," is many steps away from "You should never wear socks if you want to get laid." I didn't think that would ever be a sentence I would need to type.

Whatever works. But I wear socks all the time and have yet to find they were a hindrance* to getting laid.

 TM

*This word should be spelled, "hinderance." English makes no sense.
 | I wear loafers or mocs unless in a suit. You can’t put socks on with a pair of nice loafers or mocs. Ruins the look, and the feel. I like being aired-out.

I don’t know what socks I wear. I get them as presents from family members who share your views (except for dear old dad, who doesn’t wear them much).

They’re nice. Quite silky. I’m reminded of this by those relatives when I refuse to wear them. My brother in law thinks the sockless thing is a louche look.

It should be spelled hinderance.

They are overwear, because they can be seen when seated. This is half of the problem.

Generally, I'm fine with whatever you people want to do in the bedroom (or on the kitchen floor, if that floats your steamer).
But if you're looking at each other's socks, I'm sorry, you're doing it wrong.

I’ve never done the contrasting collar shirt thing myself, but like TM, I have seen a few people pull it off. (I have also seen exactly one friend pull off a bow tie.)

My version of ferrets’ story re Harvey Miller’s look was suspenders (excuse me, “braces”) at my old firm. The head of litigation wore them, and no one else was allowed to by unwritten but clearly understood law. This was also the guy who, when business casual was introduced, sent a a memo (printed, not by email) to all of the associates in his department that those who wished to dress in business casual had to notify him in advance so that he could confirm that they had no client meetings, appearances, etc. that day. This made the troops sullen but not mutinous, and it took a long time for that policy to change. |

 | At the firm I was at for that shift, the battle was between the partners who were concerned about what their clients would think if the lawyers were wearing business casual, and the lawyers who were afraid about what their clients would think if they weren't.

"Nice loafers" is not an oxymoron. "Nice ascot", "Nice codpiece", and "Nice argyle socks with your plus fours" are oxymorons. |
