Response? You don't have an identity as a fucking response. What the fuck are you even talking about? White people are so invested in their identities that they created law that said one drop of black blood means you lose it. Response? Are you on fucking meth?

I have to say, I find the idea of "whiteness" as identity kind of bizarre. I mean, WTF is "whiteness"?
I don't know why Les wants to have this utterly stupid conversation, but I guess it's better than more Sebby.

A state of willful innocence.

It's the baseline. It's the standard. Everything else in this country is other, no matter when you got here. It's the shared ability to crush people based on their race for centuries, isolate them, ostracize them, and then turn around and be angry because you have never needed an identity based on race because you get to be seen as an individual in all things, and be angry about it.

It's also the special ability to always get the benefit of the doubt but never notice it.

I actually really liked the show. It's just when you get behind you feel overwhelmed. You let it get too far and then one day you realize you just don't have the time.
It's a Chapin's "Cat's in the Cradle" sort of situation. I regret it deeply... but what am going to do? I had my chance and missed it, and now all I have is regret.

Lack of dedication. My son’s friend caught up all seven seasons over the weekend. One thing I will give millennials is that they school us on binge watching.

I think the idea that whiteness gets defined based on those who are excluded or oppressed is what makes it unappealing as an identifier. I mean, I'm proud to be Catholic (well, not all the time) or a Bostonian or American, but white? Who is proud of being white?
Which is my reaction to that article. At the end of the end, if you're embracing "whiteness" as your identity, you may want to look in the mirror and see if there is a racist there. The odds are pretty good there is.
It is amazing how little the politics of white identity has changed:

I don't know, but it's dumb. I'm technically white, but what does that mean? So are billions of other people.
I've never been comfortable identifying myself. What am I? I'm a mutt. Genetic mash-up from aeons of forebears fucking. How was I raised? Who cares. I can't be proud or ashamed of my genes or my upbringing. I had no choice in either of them. That'd be like being proud or ashamed of being male or female, or short or tall, or attractive or unattractive. You didn't do that. That happened to you.
If a guy wants to identify as white, I'd say it's a bit unnecessary, as we already know that. Unless he's not white but wishes to identify as white, in which case, okay. I guess one can identify as anything one likes. But why pick white? Seems pretty boring. I'd pick Native American. (I find great comfort in the Native American belief that we're just passing forms of fungible matter which are all part of the broader ecosystem, being born, dying, and being recycled in varying forms endlessly. It's an elegant and dignified way of dealing with mortality. It's also scientifically accurate.)

I binge watched Breaking Bad in its entirety over a month and was exhausted when it was done.
I know a GOT binge lies in my future. I'm just nervous about breaking the seal and starting again.

I describe economic incentives and you call them a deus ex machine? Um, whatever.
|
Yes. You totally skipped around the idea that journalists have a bent by arguing newspaper owners have an economic incentive to be centrist which they'd never defy. Voila, they must be centrist.
Except: No one buys a newspaper to make money anymore, so to even be in the business demonstrates one is not a rational economic actor. And then there's that little difference between the journalists and management. If there are any owners of papers who are not keeping them as vanity purchases, or because they inherited them and can't sell them, those owners have probably observed that it's just a tad difficult to get the journalists to write what ownership wants them to write. "Herding cats" barely starts to describe it.

They want to be in the middle, and try to air both sides, which often means airing people like Corey Lewandowski as commentators.

They want a fight. Fox just hired Donna Brazile and keeps Juan Williams on staff for this reason.

No, my argument was that centrism was the model in the days of broadcast news when there were few outlets. Cable opened the doors to serving niche markets, like HGTV, Fox Soccer Channel, and Fox News.
|
Well, my argument was aimed at the media of today. Why would I be criticizing the media of old for being biased?

There's no technical definition of whiteness. It's a social construct.

Good for you. I was talking about traditional media, in a post responding to GGG. I've tried to talk to you previously about how the media works, but you always say the same thing and never respond to what I say.
