I have come in recent years to recognize that I have certain flaws in my assessments. Much like an economist, I assume rational actors too often. Much like an old line Republican who's perhaps not been as close to the hoi polloi of Social Conservativeland as I might be, I have a misguided assumption that some wise old moderate will always squash the most lurid demands of the Jesus Freaks.
The suicide bombers have the wheel. My gin soaked analyses of what will happen in the GOP might as well be from 1978.
I'd say I'm surprised, that I go to school every day. And I am, but I won't, because whatever leads to the sort of troglodyte reactive politics that caused this abortion debacle in TX I don't really want to understand. It's mental illness.

Yes, and the suicide bombers are chuckling at all the old line conservatives who have joined them for the ride, while simultaneously telling them Gilead is here and they can join the Sons of Jacob or choose the wall.

What's really remarkable about this particular bill was that in the 2019 session, the Rs in the Texas legislature were super-super cautious about abortion laws. The Georgia law that will probably formally undo Roe came out when our ledge was in session, but they were spooked by the 2018 election results. Ds gained seats, Beto came within 200K of Cruz. They waaaay eased off the gas.
They must have seen something in 2020 that changed their minds.

I'm betting that something involves Hispanic voters. Priest have a lot of influence in many Hispanic communities, and played a big role in keeping the Dem vote down.
Just my speculation, I expect you know much better than I do.

Maybe. This Texas Monthly article goes into it, though. The woman who pushed it through is a freshman white woman. She doesn't seem the type to talk to Hispanic clergy. The biggest change was the make up of the court. And the absence of the staunchest defender of reproductive rights on the bench that we've ever had.
I was chatting with some OBs today. There is a very real chance that high-risk maternal fetal medicine specialists will leave the state because of this. Too dangerous to stay. Lots of women and children's lives have been put at risk.
The legislature knows this, and they do not care.

Michigan has had a R state legislature for a while because of Gerrymandering; not as crazy as yours, but def not representative. But we had a vote a few years back to take redistricting away from the state legislature and put it in the hands of a panel. The panel is 4 D 4 R and 1 independent, whatever that means. I’m anxious to see what they do with the census.
