Fueled by national controversy and an Ash Wednesday opening, "The Passion of the Christ," Mel Gibson's new film about the Crucifixion, took in $23.5 million at the box office on its opening day.

This thing is playing on more screens than Return of the King, and shows at popular times are sold out for the next couple weeks. Even if this is kinda wingnut country, it's still pretty impressive. Nice mix of religion and lucre.

Oh yeah, I saw that last night. No idea how they did the Vick/Urlacher playing hockey scene, other than to have them on skates. Vick's skating is pretty terrible -- clue number one that it's somewhat real.

BUt yeah, the best commercial ever. When it got the RJ stuff I almost peed my pants.

This is a fucking disaster. Where the money is, the culture follows. Expect to see "Savior! The Birth of Baby Jesus," staring Jude Law as Joseph and Scarlett Johnansen as Mary; and "The Lonelist Walk: 40 Days and 40 Nights of Suffering" starring Giovanni Ribisi; and "Ultimate Betrayal!" with Taye Diggs as Judas.
