GGG is tweeting. The craziest thing from the film is the guy finishing just after the blast, looking at his time watch, like he was so zonked he didn't realize what happened, then a grandfather and baby in stroller crossed.

It was a sobering day. We are still learning of people near the blast or affected by it. My family's business has one employee who was injured, and her boyfriend has lost his leg. I don't yet have any details other than that.

My daughter was at school right near the blast - she had eaten lunch within yards of the blast site just a couple hours before. They went into lockdown. I felt great relief when I heard they were ok, but when you start hearing about multiple other bombs being found, the worries come back. When I went to get them almost two hours later, I had to figure out where I could access the periphery of the closed off area to meet my daughter and a car load of her friends; even though cells got knocked out in the area, people opened their wifi and that made it possible to meet up with them. The drive there, less than a mile away, intersected two routes between one of the hospitals and the blast site, and even that much time after the blasts there were multiple ambulances making the run on the way. I lost track of how many checkpoints there were. There was a massive checkpoint near Mass. General and another massive one by MIT, complete with a bomb squad and three fire engines. But a small one on almost every intersection. On the drive, two bomb squad deployments and a motorcade also went by. It was the closest thing to a war zone I think I've seen in real life, but, surreally, in the middle of a normal day's commuting pattern. Once we were clear and had dropped off her friends, my daughter, who spent two hours about 100 yards from the site with a constant stream of sirens going by her, just started shaking.

We then learned two sister-in-laws and an 8 year old nephew were at the site, just seconds before we learned an 8 year old was among the victims. All safe now.

Jesus. I'm so sorry that you and all of Boston had to go through this. I imagine that the urge to hug your daughter and not let go was pretty damned strong. Let us know if there's anything that we can do to help.

I'm just glad I'm getting an IRS extension now. I really don't feel like doing my taxes today.

You know, there were 20 bomb explosions in Baghdad yesterday, and more than 30 killed. Yesterday was a bad day here, but most people are counting their blessings during it and despite it.

This. My boss runs Boston every year and was there -- his mom's a runner of some acclaim in her age group and was still on the course. Thousands of miles away, I spent yesterday alternating between sadness and fury. It gives a glimpse into the mindset within a combat zone, where the constant possibility of sudden and unprovided death weighs on your mind and causes a kind of psychosis.

A few months ago, I had reason to view dozens of x-rays of patients with orthopaedic injuries in the lower extremities. They were usualy the result of car crashes, and there were a depressing number of birthdates in the 1980s and 1990s. I also had to go through a ton of powerpoint presentations showing how to fix some of these injuries. Pretty damned gruesome stuff. Later, I chatted with the trauma surgeon who took care of the patients, and he explained that what I had seen was not that bad. He'd been in Germany a few years earlier at one of the bases where US soldiers get flown immediately after being blown up. The advances in trauma in the last few years have been pretty amazing, and docs who've trained in the field have become particularly adept at dealing with blown to bits, er, bits. As horrific and pointless as the wars have been, I suppose it's a good thing that our docs have become very, very good at putting people back together again.

I sincerely hope that this is a momentary blip, and they can go back to using those skills mainly to fix kids in car crashes.

Speaking of the IRS, and to raise what seems like a minor thing in this context, I was unable to file electronically because Ms. Slothrop's SSN had appeared on another return. Has anyone heard of this happening? Two co-workers tell me that we are the victims of identity theft -- that people will file early for a refund with your SSN.

One amazing thing about this blast is that the death toll has not been steadily climbing as you often see. I suspect that this is in part because there are seven top teaching hospitals (ignoring Dana Farber) within a mile or so of the site, and many extraordinary medical professionals volunteering at the site.

We had an electronic filing bounced for a similar reason, but it wasn't identity theft, it was my wife being on a fiduciary return and the computer getting confused. I understand their computers get confused easily.

I know Penske claims your kids as dependents. Might it be that?

All I know for sure right now is that I'm running Boston next year. Nothing will keep me away.

Yep. 20% of all entries are reserved for "partners" who include John Hancock, Adidas, and a slew of charities. Almost 10% of the field yesterday was composed of charity runners.

(I acknowledge my slowness, and embrace it.)
