After a weekend of full time review and study of the background of the potential nominees, my preferences, in order from most preferential to least preferential (but better than nothing), as based on not necessarily equal consideration of their respective record/perceived ideology, accomplishments/personal history, and the political considerations of the confirmation process, are:

(i) John Roberts;
(ii) Michael McConnell; or

In the case of two consecutive nominees getting shot down I would opt for the nuclear option, Orrin Hatch.
