The hamburger eating people who are at least "fast" on through to elite are the exceptions.

From my experience the thought of any real food is dry heave city, although my gastrointestinal systems largely shut down during races.

I have spent more days existing on espresso, gels and cola than I can remember.

Those were the days indeed.

I have had to swear off Odd Todd ever since I discovered more than one show that we both watched - including that Animal Cops one. It was just too scary - being like Odd Todd that is, not the Animal Cop show.

Your own mixture is the same thing just in a different form. They are using someone else's product and tailoring it to what they have perceived their needs are, but the foundation is still someone else's gel, bar, powder, liquid product. Gels, bars, powder, liquids are just different forms of the same thing, an energy source that is not bulky that you can take during competition. Hell, I' m not elite elite and I have my own "supersecret" formulation combining gels, powders and water that took about dozen marathons and 4 IMs to perfect.

What I meant by a mixture was that the elites have their own concentration of sport's drink, not including gels, etc. Of course, I could be wrong. They may throw some gel in there, although that conflicts with my sources. Neither Paula nor KK reveal what they have in their mixtures, so I guess it could be anything...

Not that I am anything other than a fat slob couch potato, but how did the conversation morph from protein bars to things like gels and clif bars that are pretty much totally carbohydrates? I'm no doubt missing something. I really don't understand how a gel is different from a sports drink, other than it doesn't provide hydration.

FWIW, fyi, for the record, I use gels mixed with unflavored powders. NTTAWWT. I like the taste of the chocolate flavoured gels and like Costanza before me, I bow down to the evil lord of the cocoa bean.
