ETA that the handle on the Kitchen Aid model looks like a hand-roaster to me.

Yeah, it's $200 more, but it will *never* need to be replaced and there won't be any "does the Le Creuset [whatever] better" questions.

I have an ancient plain cast aluminum one so have no opinion on which of the lovely enameled ones are best other than to avoid the one that chips.

Has Sequels mentioned what size Dutch oven she wants? That's the other consideration. I learned this weekend exactly how big a 6 qt. crock pot is -- I'm going to have to make huge quantities of stew, soups, chili, etc. to use it. |

 | Other brands for which this is true (cheaper competitor is probably, or even definitely, a better value, but you buy the brand name to guarantee there are no "what if" buyer's remorse):
BoseBMWTiffanyCuisinartiPhone (maybe Apple generally, but that's debatable)PergoRolex

I'm missing a bunch. |

I'm missing a bunch. | I would definitely not put Bose on that list. Typically way overpriced and not that great. |

				Slow-cookers

Does anyone recommend one that they've had for a long time? A few weeks ago someone posted a link to the America's Test Kitchen review. But it turns out that the ones they liked most have been roundly trashed on Amazon -- basically, they work really well for a few months, then break. Usually, just after the warranty runs.

 What's the best cure?
Had a dinner party last night.... it was rough. But we drank some really good wine, and the food turned out quite nice.

Usually, just after the warranty runs. | I have a Procter-Silex 2 quart one that I've had forever and it's awesome. I mostly just use it for cooking oatmeal though. And the occasional stew. My boyfriend has a Procter-Silex one too -- his is 4 quart and he inherited it from his mother so I think it is about 6 years old. Works fine. He uses it a lot. |

I'm missing a bunch. | I've heard this is the reason Penske became dominant in the sock market, even though your Grey Pubes sock did everything as well as his best.

None of that is true with anything on Atticus' list (except for maybe the Iphone). Those things just have the perception of being better.

Usually, just after the warranty runs. | I've had my Cuisinart for 4 years and use it somewhat regularly. I find this reliability surprising, since we burned through 2 Cuisinart coffee makers in less than 2 years. As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, it works well, but I don't love it because the outside housing is rectangular and so it's bigger, and harder to store, than it should be for its capacity. I don't know if they've changed the design.

Since they are so incredibly cheap now, maybe the more practical (if not more ecological route) is to buy a lower end model and plan to replace it sooner than you otherwise would. |

If someone wants Bose "X" and you get them something better, you're going to spend Christmas disabusing them of the notion that the Bose is, in fact, the best.

That said, who buys a BMW (or Rolex) and puts it under the tree?
