I got a chuckle out of that one. Note though that the Rs got a substantial number of Democratic votes on that bill - they just wanted more. The leadership may have to (gasp!) talk to someone about it, but they will find Dems willing to talk.

I read an article yesterday that suggests that a new coalition may be forming between moderate DEMs (who are afraid of their re-election changes) and traditional Rs (who are afraid of the Tparty Rs).

There are not many moderate dems. They got defeated by Tea Partiers. On many of these issues, the Rs are going to have to work with liberals.

The Rs blame the Dems when they trip on their own feet. It's the same old Bush approach of never admitting wrong, always pointing the finger. Until some of them overcome that, it's just very hard to work with the bastards. Cantor's recent jockeying has been some of the worst of this stuff.

That seems inevitable. I'm quite worried that this coalition will end up standing for the status quo and leaving our fiscal issues unaddressed.

This sucks beyond the telling, especially for those of us who work for the state government. Of course, we've known this was coming for years, but the reality is really, really grim.

I kinda hope that Perry wins whatever national race he's running for, if only to get him the hell out of the governor's mansion.

Pelosi didn't have much trouble in the house. It was Reid in the Senate.

That's my recollection too.

Why? A coalition of actual moderates from both parties, assuming there are any left, seems to be the only hope. Those are the only people who have ever exercised any fiscal responsibility, and their fear of the Tea Party will press them to be more responsible -- without being as petulant and childish as the TPers seem to be. Besides, an initiative growing out of a coalition from the two parties is the only way that the major problems can actually be addressed, because otherwise it'll be a festival of "the Dems want to destroy the military!" and "The Rs want to kill Social Security!"

It's still going to be politically easier to "kick the can down the road" and I don't really see these "moderates" as being willing to make hard choices.

But I hope you are right.
