Once again, you're assuming that there are good investment opportunities out there, limited only availability of capital. But that's not the world we're living in right. People want to save, not invest, because the world looks risky and they don't see good opportunities to invest in. Because there's no demand.

Unless those postal workers are all secret entrepeneurs.

Unless those postal workers are all secret entrepeneurs.
 | Or unless they expect any employer to pay legal minimum wage and social security.

(Seriously, the idiocy of trying to find offsetting spending to balance out the cost of the payroll tax break is mind-numbing, in the way that ironweed was getting at.)

I'm seeing people start to move away from and end of the world view, to trying to beat inflation. | If that were true, then you wouldn't need to force them to invest on the private side by taking away the option to invest in government bonds. The whole reason there's a flight to safety is that they don't see attractive investment options. If people are really moving away from that view to looking for ways to beat inflation, then (a) they'll find them, and interest rates will go up as there's less demand for safe investments and more for returns, or (b) they won't find them because there's no demand. In either case, it's crazy to say that it makes things better to take away their ability to put their money somewhere safe.

In other words, I hope you're right, but we wouldn't have these problems if you were right.

Enemy to tyrants. Champion of liberty. Opponent of religion. A notorious drunk. Most of all, someone that would actually cause me to buy Vanity Fair, if his articles weren't available in full on-line. If any writer could pull together the divergent folks on this board, I'd think it was Hitch.

In these times, we need more honest writers like Hitchens. Love him, hate him, both.

Godspeed*

Funny, those people who have actually created companies and jobs tend to agree with me, the only one here who has created a company and jobs. Maybe some of these job creators need to read more blogs? Any suggestions?

p.s. Harry Reid said "my job is to create jobs?" wow. there's a worker who should be canned, eh?
