Yes. If only John McCain and Sarah Palin had had the chance to steer the ship of state through the recession.

This makes me regret voting for McClintock.

Wait. What? Hank's the only one around here who's voted for candidates from both parties.

Amusing/sad Awl page on gerrymandered districts.

Note - CA's are being redrawn by a non-partisan panel, which appears to being doing a decent job so far, pursuant to voter-approved initiative (insert Atticus groan here).

From my house, if you go north, south, east or west, you quickly find yourself in another congressional district.

I don't usually respond to the same post twice, but, taking Penske as model here, I will, because what I have to say is just so excellent.

There's a very simple way to end this gerrymandering nonsense, an idea I've had that I've never seen anywhere else that would solve the problem and let people waste time and effort on other things.

Every time there's a redistricting, anyone who wants to can submit a redistricting plan. The plan that gets used is the one where (a) each district has no more or less residents than a pre-set floor and ceiling (perhaps whatever is used now), and (b) has the shortest aggregate borders.

That's it. Compact districts.

I looooove that Gary Peters is crashed into Sander Levin next election- and America will be stronger with one of them gone.

Percentage collar on an equal split of total population over number of districts.

New York's latest non-partisan commission amendment contained a "shortest borders" related limit: http://open.nysenate.gov/legislation...ill/S3331-2011 subject to a 5% aggregate departure.

The Onion

Quote:
Congress Continues Debate Over Whether Or Not Nation Should Be Economically Ruined

WASHINGTON—Members of the U.S. Congress reported Wednesday they were continuing to carefully debate the issue of whether or not they should allow the country to descend into a roiling economic meltdown of historically dire proportions. "It is a question that, I think, is worthy of serious consideration: Should we take steps to avoid a crippling, decades-long depression that would lead to disastrous consequences on a worldwide scale? Or should we not do that?" asked House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), adding that arguments could be made for both sides, and that the debate over ensuring America’s financial solvency versus allowing the nation to default on its debt—which would torpedo stock markets, cause mortgage and interests rates to skyrocket, and decimate the value of the U.S. dollar—is “certainly a conversation worth having.” "Obviously, we don't want to rush to consensus on whether it is or isn't a good idea to save the American economy and all our respective livelihoods from certain peril until we've examined this thorny dilemma from every angle. And if we’re still discussing this matter on Aug. 2, well, then, so be it.” At press time, President Obama said he personally believed the country should not be economically ruined.

This kind of stuff takes all the fun out of the legislative sporting process.
