Heck, one could question whether The Edge can be labelled a "rock legend" when grouped with Page. |

The movie pretty evidently was trying to get some generational variety.

He goes all over the fucking place, and he's very, very good in each iteration. He also is pretty popular with the music dorks, the critics, and the general rock-listening population. That's a hard thing to pull off.

It's obvious that they took three guitarists from different eras. Who else over the last 15 years or so do you think even comes close to qualifying?

 | No one. The alternative would've been to shoot for 3 legends at a similar level -- say Page, Clapton, and Santana -- but that would have been a very different movie. I think the choices were excellent. The similarities you note between Page and White are interesting, and Edge is a good, contrasting middle-person.

He held the guitar that made Houses of the Holy during a Page and Plant show. He set up the White Stripes at SXSW (having to borrow everything but the guitar from other bands) in a tiny tiny room in 2000. And he worked a U2 stadium show in the late 90s. He said that the reason you never hear any U2 covers from albums after Unforgettable Fire is that crappy cover bands can't afford all the equipment. The Edge has a full board in front of him, and there's a roadie off stage working an effects board too. Catastrophic tech failure at a U2 concert . I like the juxtaposition, because it's a totally different style and approach to the insturment than the, er, straightforward(?) way of Page and White. Looks like a pretty awesome movie.

I saw a long interview with the filmmaker and it looks amazing.

Guitar-driven rock is just not my thing, but I admit a new appreciation for the Edge as a result of the footage.
