I think I may be the only American who listened to her singing yesterday and thought someone brought the wrong Aretha to the party. I only heard it on the radio and it sounded like someone's slightly senile grandmother. There, I said it.

Aretha gets to do whatever she wants at this point. she gains and loses as much a diet Oprah weighs, she wears crazy dresses and all sorts of odd accessories. With Aretha it hasn't been about looking good according to traditional standards in years. she doesn't care. that's how it goes in Detroit.




PS I represented her in a copyright infringement case a million years ago. me and my co-plebe sat dreaming up 200 requests to admit to bury the poor plaintiff and make him drop the case. our goal was that we would meet her at some point. alas, the case settled pre-depo.

When I was in Africa recently, I saw a number of tourists sporting safari vests and bush jackets. Because it is very important to have lots and lots of pockets for your stuff* when you are being driven around in a Land Rover taking pictures of pretty animals. One of the tourists I saw had a rattail. I think he was German.


*I don't know what they keep in those pockets. Chapstick? Sunblock? People used to carry camera film in them but you don't need that now with digital cameras.

I loved Banana Republic in the 80s. Most of my lightweight spring/summer clothes came from there until the Gap rebranded it in the early 90s. That was a store that fully understood how to attire someone living in tropical or sub-tropical climates. Lightweight shirts, skirts, shorts and pants that didn't add to heat and humidity were perfect for people living in Houston, Texas.

Plus, I liked the stories (and J. Peterman's too, for that matter). I still have a leather bomber jacket from there that I bought in 1990ish or so.

I think it depends on the individual. Here's what I think the following socks might keep in their Brian Fellows vest pockets while out on safari:

Atticus: mostly pocket bibles and religious texts, some in the original Aramaic--and one with a hollowed out secret compartment holding naughty hand-drawn pictures of Kim Possible.

bnb: copies of her father's pilot license. You know, in case it comes up.

Diane Keaton: Extra moral indignation and outrage, you know, just in case she runs out.

dtb: Trick question. dtb has people to hold things for her.

Gattigap: Another trick question, Gatti's insurance policy forbids him from leaving the SoCal area or getting his heartbeat over 130 bpm.

I tried to like Michelle's inaugural gown -- I really did, but I think it was just a little boxy on her. She has a fabulous statuesque body and the draping could have been a lot sexier.
