So, on to current events.....

Madonna, apparently concerned about how far she's falling behind Angelina (not to mention the Octomom), is off trying to adopt another child accessory. Is this a good thing or would it be better to fund an orphanage or even fund adoptions for people who can't afford an international adoption?

Should Manson family members ever get out of jail? And do their sentences compare to those for more recent murders or have we gotten jaded? http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/03/30/...ing/index.html

In local news, my aunt & uncle in Moorhead (on the Minnesota side of Fargo) have 5 sump pumps going in their basement and my cousin and his wife outside Fargo have to canoe up to their house (but it is apparently not flooded).

Tomorrow is the election in NY's 20th CD (birthplace of your's truly and 2 US Presidents, and home to a ton of 19th Century Robber Barrons). The great thing about NY 20 (since this is the FB not the PB) - the big campaign stops are almost all diners. As I read it, the two candidates and their surrogates visited about 5 diners yesterday. Where else but upstate NY can you find so many diners left - with people in them?

Doesn't every town have a diner?

I know of less a half dozen left in Massachusetts, mostly ones frequented by students late at night. There are a couple in Boston catering to urban professionals looking for pricey comfort food (not the $1.99 special). A dozen years ago, perhaps, most towns had one, but they were fading even then.

Most of my favorites are gone.

right- you have to distinguish between a real diner (I know 2 within a few miles) from the "Ed Debivic's" (sp?) fake diners.

Are you excluding the classic NYC Greek diner (and I don't know why you would)? Because there are 2 on every block.

Can you get 2 eggs, 2 pancakes, 2 sausage, 2 toast and hash browns for $2.99? Then it ain't a "real" diner.

A classic diner is a stand-alone building. I believe a TCOTU one was in After Hours, and maybe Stand Up?

You're kidding, right? There are at least four diners within my little orbit up here. And there's not much else up here.

And you're a long step or a short spit away from NY20.

A couple of the diners I can think of in Mass. are on Rt. 7. But the Salt & Pepper in Pittsfield is long gone, and that was the best of them back in the day.

The "real" diners I know aren't that cheap because they don't have the buying power of a Dennys or IHOP. But they are old time small town diners. There are even some of those here in the big (for MN) city.

Not always stand alone. In the small towns on either side of the Fugee Farm, the buildings on the main street "downtown" are attached old brick like this:

The sugar Bowl is not a diner.
