Fat Oprah vs Thin Oprah

My best friend called me this morning to say his doctor told him he needs to lose (at least) 40 pounds. Though he is a tall man, he is in deep denial about how fat he has become. He argued with me that fitness will be his ticket back to svelteness and that the weight gain has happened over the past 8 months. He is wrong on both counts.

I pointed out to him that he ate a bucket of buttered popcorn and the equivalent of 4 servings of pasta while I was with him last night.

His response: "I hadn't eaten all day and I didn't drink beer!" And then we argued over portion-size.

Any advice on conveying information about proper nutrition and portion size to a man in deep denial?
