The comma after the year suggest a mental pause in the flow of the sentence that I find unnecessary, regardless of what Melt Banana says about it. This is the first and will be the last time I part with Melt Banana on such issues.

Look, you've already paused once for the comma after the date, so why not again? It's like 4/4 time--much easier. When you throw in some funky meter like 9/8 it just gets confusing.
