WANT a real dog bites man story? A 27-year-old Bronx college graduate is not suing her alma mater because it failed to get her a job. But for four days, various media outlets and blogs have been peddling the claim that she is. It's certainly a juicy-sounding welfare-moms-with-Cadillacs-type anecdote. A quick internet search seems to show that the first paper to report it (on August 2nd) was the New York Post, ever a bastion of dispassionate reporting on urban issues (see "Wrong-Way Crash Mom Drunk, Stoned"), and one with no particular ideological axes to grind ("Send Doctor Bill To The Rich"). But other outlets, like CNN, spun the story the same way ("Alumna sues college because she hasn't found a job"), even though their own reporting showed it was wrong.
Fortunately, CNN did go the extra mile and link to a scan of the court filing. And that enabled a reader of Andrew Sullivan's blog to see the distortion. The graduate is not suing Monroe College for failing to find her a job. She is suing because she alleges that the school's Office of Career Advancement did not try to find her a job, and that this abrogates the promises the school made when she paid them $70,000 in tuition. In the filing, she says the school's job counselors "are not making sure their e-recruiting clients call the graduates that recently finished college for a [sic] interview." Monroe's website says every student gets "a Career Advisor, who provides one-on-one assistance with career decision-making, resume and letter writing, and job search strategies." Based on what the graduate told CNN, she seems to think that the school promised her its job counselors would do more for her than they did.
That allegation may be without merit. Or it may not. Maybe the plaintiff is a confused young woman with an outsized sense of entitlement who blames her problems on others. Or maybe the college is deceptively advertising to low-income youth with poor secondary educations that it will help them get good jobs, encouraging them to take out tens of thousands of dollars in student loans, when in fact its graduates rarely get good jobs, and its career counselors barely lift a finger to help them. Who knows? Not the New York Post or CNN....

Man, I'd have been f'd. I wouldn't have been last in my class (ug and ls), but I'd have been Phi Beta Skippa, for sure.

Oh, they don't give a shit about you. The feds want to make sure the school is actually providing classes that students care to attend. If not, then that tends to increase the risk that the students (1) won't get jobs, and (2) will default on their loans.
You have to keep in mind the level of the schools we're talking about here. People who end up at Monroe College didn't exactly light the academic world on fire in high school or junior high, and just getting them to show up every day is a challenge. And if they don't, they aren't generally making up the work by reading the textbook or the Nutshell or whatever people used in law school to get thru their exams.

I (pretty evidently) know *nothing* about Monroe College. But if it's (basically) a modern trade school, then $70k for a degree (ba or otherwise) is too much; and if it's something more, then it seems her expectations of placement assistance are misguided.

I think the final pairings on Saturday and Sunday should be able to take as long as they want as a benefit for playing the best going into the day, so I agree with you.
But NBA players cannot criticize refs. Quick trigger there too.

Hanks, we've all acknowledged that it was grossly unfair they didn't grant you tenure. But it's been 8 years now. Most people in your shoes have moved on.

Now we know. In other sports news, John Madden owes Ethan Albright an apology.

It’s also pretty wonderful that my awareness rating was 59. You make it sound like I wake up in the morning, helplessly shit and piss myself, then lose three of my teeth before I discover that I am trying to eat a rock for breakfast. Fuck, John, I understand you saying that I am slow and lacking athleticism, but a rating like this pretty much labels me as retarded.

My agility rating on your game is 33. It makes it sound like I just topple over if I start walking too fast. Ted Washington is rated a 40 in agility. He is listed at 365 pounds. If Ted Washington tied a white lady up and made her wear a metal bikini, he’d look just like Jabba the Hut.

Maybe so. I just find it hilarious that he repeated to the media what he said to that opponent -- in essence, "too bad they rushed us; it interfered with a great head-to-head" -- and the PGA calls this an "unreasonabl[e] attack or disparage[ment]" under its rules.
OTOH, Tiger says there was no fine. Looks like an anonymous leaker at the PGA is going to have a tougher time getting his calls returned by the AP . . . .

little deal here? when you predict what penance a priest might set after confession of a particular set of venal sins, I'll take your word, and when I explain something about sports you take mine?
can we play ball?
