This was the logical next step in the crisis.

Look, there's a socially-acceptable way to telegraph your white supremacy through historical re-enactment, and don't tell me they were too far north to dress up as Confederates.
P.S. - it's Hitler Monday!

They also lack the presence of local battlefields to more easily justify their re-enactment festivals, which is a more serious shortcoming that one might first imagine.
After all, dressing up in a funny uniform and stomping around Shiloh gives you some kind of tentative, if slippery, claim to innocuous historical fetishism instead of white supremacy. Having to conduct said festival at the local Applebee's, or Phil's basement, makes the argument that much harder.

I'm not sure about that. My buddies and I in the "Glorious Leader Ho Chi Minh Brigade" of our local Viet Cong re-enactment society get the black pajamas out and use the local park every weekend, despite the lack of any rice paddies anywhere nearby. Hint: the inside of a tunnel looks the same no matter where you dig it!

Hope's got nothing to do with it. We are so lucky, and any other conclusion can only be reached by:
1. An opportunist/advocate looking for a story (or class action suit); or
2. Someone who has no idea what he's talking about.

Uh, isn't Greece an illustration of what happens when you fund this year's expenses with TOMORROW's taxpayers' taxes? I can only defend a system where it's "this set of programs cost X; let's all pay X in taxes this year."
Tyranny of the majority can suck my dick. Funny how it only gets trotted out for outcomes that one opposes. You think it's an accident the Founders put this power in the political branches? Worse, the Congress? Even worse, the House?!?! Tyranny of the majority, please, unless you can find a constitutional provision -- which BTW is only yesterday's tyranny writ large.

I for one welcome Cletus's suggestion that society be governed by a class of philosopher kings who rule with unlimited, but benign, absolute power. What's that? No, I couldn't possibly . . . I've got so much already on my plate . . . oh, all right, go on then - but only because I care.

That wasn't the part that got my ire. It was the condemnation of those same votes as selfish.

The oh-so-precious, begging-for-an-emoticon, half-of-the-conversation posting style exhibited above underscores my already unshakeable conviction to never read this board. Ever.

Every study ever done has shown that people will agree with the statement "taxes should be cut" while agreeing also that "programs should not be reduced." You think a ballot prop that cynically conveyed to the electorate that you could starve the beast without cutting programs was anything but selfish?

This business of calculating property taxes by the last sales price instead of assessed value is ridiculous, and selfish is maybe a good word to call it. It's subsidy of people more likely to vote by people less likely to vote and others who haven't moved to the area yet, and it stinks.
