Re: Election 2010: Teabaggin' the Ds & Rs

Sounds like the tax deal looks better for Obama than the buzz would suggest.

if extending the rich guy cuts is a small part, then why is getting rid of them essential? god i'd love to run into you in court some day- not on my jury though- geez

anyone else see the press conference? I live blogged it here!

Obama had some indignation to a few questions that was sort of impressive, I think. I say "I think" because it seemed he was close to actually losing it.

So now you are actively trying to undermine your credibility?

I didn't see the press conference, but some of the commentary about it has been interesting.

It sounds like Obama and the GOP cut a deal that got him more stimulus than he was going to get otherwise and got them tax cuts for the wealthiest 3% of the country for a few more years. Dunno what you mean by "essential" -- the tax cuts that the GOP wanted are bad news for all of us who aren't in that 3%, but the GOP wanted them so badly that it sounds like Obama was able to get a lot for them. As a matter of policy, they aren't good, no doubt. As a matter of what was possible, maybe this was better than other options. Maybe.

As I've said about seventeen thousand times, I think we ought to be running deficits right now to make up for the plunge in private production, but tax cuts for the wealthiest are a really lousy way to do it.

Which one involves crucifixion?

I'm not sure whether I have compared macroeconomics to religion on this board, but it seems likely. Jim Manzi presents a better analogy and a much more thoughtful version of my point.

For the record, I do not think this makes him a genius. But he's probably a member of the elite.

so you're saying when Obama tries to work with the Rs he can still get the bulk of what he wants, as long as he realizes that two parties will likely want two different things, and he is willing to give a bit? this is 15 wins.

You've discovered that compromise is possible when what the Rs want is something other than to not do what Obama wants. That's what I call insight.

I learn more about what the FBI is doing in Los Angeles mosques from reading the New Zealand times than from our local rag.

Also, I think it's also bad news for most of that self-same 3%, unless, as Sebby noted, they're gonna die soon.

Talking politics with you is like listening to Schoolhouse Rock on an LP that keeps skipping and playing the same track over and over and over and over again.
