Also lovely

House concludes that possibility that federal courts may actually adminster justice is good reason to bar terror trials from federal courts.

Re: Election 2010: Teabaggin' the Ds & Rs

Apologies to club, but I really fucking hate Republicans today.

ETA: and while a few hours ago, I was inclined to support the tax deal as negotiated, fuck it. DREAM Act and START will probably die today too. I'm not inclined to give the Rs anything. Let them figure it out next session.

If you were a non-Tea Party R in Congress, how confident would you be that the incoming Rs would support a package that will increase the deficit this much? Personally, I'd be worried about them coming in and trying to shut down the government while they searched for ways to balance the budget without raising taxes or cutting any constituent's favorite spending.

Don't ask me. GGG apparently thinks Mass voters like the gays.

But voting for it was certainly an opportunity to paint himself as a moderate at what is probably pretty low costs. Or at least would low cost if he brought 2 others with him.

First, he told the Globe he was in favor of repeal just a couple days ago, and he's going to try to argue he just didn't like this bill for procedural reasons. That's not the kind of weasly, two-faced image he's tried to project.

Second, there is a very strong gay community here, and a surprising number of Republicans and independents in the community. Republicans from Massachusetts didn't scream that much about gay marriage (Remember, Margaret Marshall, who wrote the opinion, was appointed by a Republican governor) - those were out of staters. AND, the gay community gives big time and has gotten very highly politicized in the last 10 years. When I was in politics, it was pretty apathetic and uninvolved, despite two prominent gay congressmen in the state. The polling shows more than 3/4 of voters back DADT repeal. It's no longer even close around here.

Third, yes, Massachusetts likes the gays. We really do. Please bring your marriage and vacation business here.

Well, Susan Collins went over. Lieberman had been working on her big time and I think he got her. Murkowski and Brown both said they'd go for it too. Manchin voted against.

You should try living in SF. When I first got there, I was absolutely shocked at how left/politically correct it is. And I'm from LA, not Kansas.

the thing that gets me about SF is how many young people smoke. like you all were the first to get after smokers but so many SF'ers still do.

but yeah, this place here is de-lusion-alll.

That's a fair point, but I suspect you would have heard something by now if that's the case.

Not for nothing, but that approach costed you 63 seats in the House just a month ago.

That wasn't my experience there. Where were you hanging out?
LA is pretty much smoke free.

There's been a lot of noise from the Tea Party opposing the settlement, including DeMint. It's just been drowned out by the noise on the Democratic side. Come January, I think the Tea Party will need a scalp or two on issues they've defined as "theirs", and this could be one of them.

But I don't think we'll see. I suspect the compromise will squeak through the house with about 1/3 of the Dems and 3/4 of the Rs supporting it, and that it will get larger margins in both parties in the Senate.
