Hank, seriously -- you now sound like a complete asshole. In the "I wouldn't take your call if you were in town" category.

umm, that was a joke.

is it possible in your ivory tower world that a protester could have done something to deserve getting hit? it seems like some of these things, say Portland, are becoming quite violent. It seems like a bunch of kids are basically trying to take over entire blocks of downtown areas, and when the police attempt to clear them, it looks like a big fight to me. Maybe your eyes see it differently? when things dissolve into a big fight then protesters will get hit, won't they?
and no Sidd, i am not saying UC Davis police acted correctly, or NYC police acted correctly when they maced people just standing behind a fence. I am saying that when the thing dissolves into a street fight people will get hurt.

The question to me is whether it makes any sense for the police to try to clear them. And it makes a big difference to me who introduces the violence.
I'm not sure about Portland, but it seems that Oakland, Davis, Berkeley and NY, it's the cops who decided that ensuring compliance with their demands was sufficient reason to use violence. That's stupid, counterproductive and likely to lead to bigger protests and more violence.
Heck, watching the Davis video I found myself routing for the crowd to give some back to the cops in riot gear, and then truly impressed that they did not.

Also, I think Stephen Colbert did a good job of summing up why it can be hard to judge who's responsible for what amount of violence from news reports. "Nudge" and "clash" indeed.

Believe I read that she is a tenured professor of English. FWIW.

Sure, it's possible. It's also possible that they didn't -- and, right now, the only evidence we have is that they didn't. Despite all the video cameras that were there.
If I see a video of a shooting, and the shooter claims self-defense but neither that video nor any of the cameras around him show the victim doing anything threatening, well, it's possible that the shooter is right. But it's not likely.

Nor are you saying that they acted incorrectly. You are, as usual, refusing to take a position so that you can attack anyone who does.

And, umm, even with you saying it was a joke I, umm, believe that the latter is actually what you were, umm, trying to express.

I did say it, about 20 times.
You are back on ignore through the end of 2011. Club if you see this, we are engaging with ggg again, but Sidd? not Sidd.
The funny thing with you (read sad actually) is that in the guise of insisting the free speech of the protester is important above all, you attack anyone who speaks something that doesn't fall in your tunnel visioned dogma.
Ty/Adder/GGG if you want this board to flourish, and for people not to act trollish, you really need to let Sidd know you disapprove of his simple hate act. the most bizarre part of it is he claims my schtick is tired.

Useless fact: Jimmy Page plays guitar on that track.

In fairness, taking a position is overrated. Often, those taking positions quickly do so based on emotion, or "beliefs," whatever the fuck that means. This has lead to a lot of the dumb, absolutist political discourse we suffer under today.

I think it would be best if you put everyone on ignore. It's not like you have anything to say. You just spew shit -- which shouldn't be surprising, since that's what you're full of.

by the way, does her job status imply that hurting her is somehow worse than hurting poor people to you? I really don't understand your point.

I do enjoy your undying faith in reason. Even if it is irrational.
