Like an outdated combine harvester,
And everyone young going down the long slide
To happiness, endlessly. I wonder if
Anyone looked at me, forty years back,
And thought, That’ll be the life;
No God any more, or sweating in the dark
About hell and that, or having to hide
What you think of the priest. He
And his lot will all go down the long slide
Like free bloody birds. And immediately
Rather than words comes the thought of high windows:
The sun-comprehending glass,
And beyond it, the deep blue air, that shows
Nothing, and is nowhere, and is endless.

You must give Atticus self-awareness credit for choosing, as his proxy, a deceased librarian-poet who claimed that deprivation for him was what daffodils were for Wordsworth.

the original notbob never felt guilt. he felt fear his wife might find out about the compliment, but never guilt, because he always knew the compliment was innocent.

But as far as Adder taking offense is concerned, what difference does it make when it happened?

I suspect that Adder didn't really mean "I am so offended by this!" but, rather, "why didn't they say something like "Chris Brown physically injured ... and therefore we aren't comfortable giving him a stage to perform."
You have to read what Adder says through a filter that makes it make sense (sort of like with Hank, except with Adder it's usually possible).
