Not bad. I didn't know you spent your summers in Columbia. I'd suggest the cap be turned around backwards (though you still have a small print COCKS on the back), and a constant use of "bro" in conversation, but otherwise I think you're there.

The sport of fencing is divided into three weapons:

Foil—a light thrusting weapon that targets the torso, including the back, but not the arms. Touches are scored only with the tip; hits with the side of the blade do not count, and do not halt the action. Touches that land outside of the target area (off-target) stop the action, and are not scored. Only a single hit can be scored by either fencer at one time. If both fencers hit at the same time, the referee uses the rules of "right of way" to determine which fencer gets the point.
Sabre—a light cutting and thrusting weapon that targets the entire body above the waist, excluding the hands. Hits with the edges of the blade as well as the tip are valid. As in foil, touches which land outside of the target area are not scored. However, unlike foil, these off-target touches do not stop the action, and the fencing continues. In the case of both fencers landing a scoring touch, the referee determines which fencer receives the point for the action, again through the use of "right of way".
Épée—a heavier thrusting weapon that targets the entire body. All hits must be with the tip and not the sides of the blade. Touches hit by the side of the blade do not halt the action. Unlike foil and sabre, Épée does not use "right of way", and allows simultaneous hits by both fencers. However, if the score is tied at the last point and a double touch is scored, nobody is awarded the point.

Hmmmm. It looks like I was watching foil for women and either foil or Épée for the men. There was no slashing in either. And I don't recall seeing both male fencers winning a point at the same time. Either way, the sport I watched the men perform seemed stupid. But I used to feel that way about soccer and I don't feel that way (entirely) anymore,* so who knows? Maybe it's just my ignorance.

*I still don't understand why there is an offsides rule in soccer. If the defense falls asleep and allows someone to get behind them, whose fault is that? What would be the issue if the rule was removed? Would there be less scoring because everyone would keep too many people back to guard against that possibility?

Your last sentence is the answer.

Olympics

Spare me the whining about USA Basketball running up the score. What are they supposed to do -- let the shot clock run out? Aim for out-of-bounds (like badminton players)?

Screw 'em. No one whined about Germany running up the score when they scored 8-0 on the Saudis in the World Cup.

Surely you've played pickup ball in a game with a guy who never gets back on defense and just hangs out in the backcourt waiting for his teammate to get the rebound so he can cherry pick? That's what soccer doesn't want, especially because unlike a 5 on 5 basketball game, leaving one guy down near the opposing goal doesn't entirely cripple your ability to play defense.

I thought it was more of a civil rights issue and if you allowed it you'd also have to allow incest and beastiality and stuff.

not the same. as an example, The French oppose eliminating the offsides rule, but are on record as supporting incest and bestiality.

Dear Fbettys

Be careful on water slides. Some can give you "intimate" injuries:

I played soccer from age 4 through high school (and was told I could play DII somewhere)...and I completely agree. Getting rid of offsides would really open up the field and allow for more offense (and get rid of one of the most controversial penalties in sport). I don't see why someone doesn't run a bunch of exhibition games without the rule to see what it looks like.

I've got nothing else for you. Men's fencing may just be stupid as a spectator sport. I have not watched fencing in a very long time, and I think I was pretty high the few times I did.

Now that I think about, the posts on platform tennis might have been whiter.
