Yes--he's not even giving the chair a serious bird.

When he writes about basketball (in a piece that has little or nothing to do with the Celtics), I find him to be not-so-pathetic and his work very enjoyable.

So, once a year, right?
Pathetic or not, his job still beats mine.

I don't really like to read him on the Celtics, because then I regret the series of life choices and genetic failures that leave me unable to observe what he sees. But I think he sees more than most sportswriters, who use their access to compensate for the fact that they don't have much to say about the actual action.
Come to think of it, something that's true of many political reporters. Whoops! Wrong board.

I think he has (or should have) a lot of leverage at espn.com. I know many people who hate that site, but routinely check it to see if Simmons has posted an article.
I can't believe people still pay to be "Insiders" on it. It's 2009. You don't pay for web content.

Guesses on salary? $500k? He could easily leave and go elsewhere. SI, Sportsline, etc. would gladly have him just for page hits.

I've never seen the value. The only time they have something with an "In" next to it, it's either a totally bogus rumor or easily found by googling the keywords. Copy-paste-enter--easier than typing a password.

They put a fair amount of their fantasy content In (ha!) there. I've never paid for it, but I have cursed them for that from time to time. I know someone who writes for the magazine* and I've considered subscribing to that. For some reason I thought I saw something about getting the Insider content free if you are a magazine subscriber, but I could be wrong about that.
*A very well-designed magazine that happens to cover sports. Win-win.

he writes about the celtics as one who lives far away so he can't see them, right?
and i don't see him as being particularly insightful, he just has a different style of writing (that's enjoyable).

Yeah! Speak the truth, my brother. Do you hear that RT? I like this chatting board and all, but making us pay $50/month for web content in 2009? Besides, it's keeping away the Newbers.

i don't mind paying, but the tmbreasticle day can't just happen once every 8 years or whatever.
PS Sidd's back, so that makes it worth $50 for sure, NOT! ha ha JK

Estimates were $750 to $1mm. Now that he's quit writing for the mag, and is mostly-podcast? You think it's still that much?
eta: and he's under contract til next year.
