He gets the cable or satellite packages to watch their games, and I don't do that.

I beg to differ on the former. He's so opinionated that he's surely wrong quite often by most people's standards, in absolute terms anyway, but there's more wheat than chaff.

I just don't see how they could sell enough magazines or web ads to make him worth that much.

I agree. But they apparently are paying Rick Reilly $3mm+ a year, so--relatively speaking--it seems non-absurd.
Plus BS does some TV work, which I'm sure is part of the deal.

Good lord. At least Simmons is occasionally entertaining. Reilly is unreadable.

The genetic problem is that he has some ability to watch the same game I'm watching and notice and later articulate much more about it.

2. I was stunned that ESPN bought him from SI. The good thing was that it meant I could think about reading SI from cover to cover again.

Time was going to pay $1.5 per for 5 to keep him. ESPN seems to be paying him $2m to write and another $1.4m for TV work.

I guess ESPN wanted to shore up that 45 and over demo, because he fucking sucks and never has anything to say.

Disagree. I like his pieces on Real Sports. In fact, I think the whole Real Sports crew is excellent--except for Gumbel, who I want to smash with Hulk-fist.
