Word. For a few summers, many moons ago, I attended a Jewish sleep-away camp. The necessary last meal on the way to camp was a bacon cheeseburger. Mmmmm, bacon . . .

The prohibition on cheeseburgers and bacon were the foundation of my conclusion that all religious dogma is stupid and should be summarily shitcanned.

Infinite Jest made me want to go to AA, just to check it out. But I also think that while I drink regularly, I don't have a problem, and that I would have trouble with that there.

There's a guy in some of my classes who is from Montreal. He tends to act like he thinks he is European. Even though he took his first ever trip to France this year. I'm surprised that the Europeans in my classes never call him on his crap, but I guess they are just happy to be around someone who wishes he were European. I've never met a Canadian who lived in the US who tried so hard to distance himself from everything about America. So, yeah.

Glad I swallowed my coffee before reading that one.

Also Katz's is really good despite having no religious supervision.

Read Caroline Knapp's Drinking, A Love Story. It's a great look at functioning alcoholism sans any emotional horseshit or revisionist explanations of childhood traumas causing the malady.

I've quit so many other things in life. One has to draw the line somewhere.

(Though after last week's obscene intake of Bombay Sapphire at the beach, I can say I will be avoiding gin for a little while. I think I am now temporarily immune to its drunk. Which is fine, as it is fall, and fall and winter are brown liquor and champagne seasons. Hence, the purchase of bourbon for a family function this weekend.)

I absolutely second this. Knapp is a terrific writer and her story is compelling.

What should I do?

There is a large basket of community books in our kitchen at my firm. It is mostly Grisham standard-fare type stuff. Should I replace the current books with fifty copies of Mein Kampf or Catcher in the Rye?
