I also can't run a block without having severe chest pain. On the other hand, I know people with cardiac problems who could keep up with Flower in a spin class, but can't walk to the park.
Really? Why would getting your heart rate up in spin class be o.k., but walking to the park be a problem?

So do spin classes. And they are wearing less in spin class.

Their cardio may well consist of walking home instead of taking a cab, or walking up the three flights of stairs when they get home.
Clearly I'm not talking about these people. If you're at the gym and you spend all your time lifting and doing abs and you're 50 pounds overweight, I cannot possibly imagine that doing some cardio work will kill you. Similarly, I doubt the doctor's advice consisted of doing 40 reps of bench press with tremendous amounts of weight and 100 half-ass crunches. But maybe they're just interested in being stronger and don't care about losing fat. But that doesn't explain why so many stupid ab trainers and 5 minute ab tapes are sold, does it?

For some people, surgical intervention will be their only real chance at weight loss.

This stuff isn't always as simple as you suggest.
I haven't read the studies, but on every single one of those shows where they are tracking someone who is morbidly obese, they are morbidly obese because they eat tens of thousands of calories a day and have reached a point where they can barely move at all. At this point, I don't think your heart could sustain the work required to pump blood around a body that taxed. And I'm not saying the simple rule I proposed applies to everyone. (And I bet EO was already at a point where she couldn't lose that much more weight, so a "subtle" change like cutting out all carbs would do a lot.) But I could take anyone on this board who was overweight, and if I could control what they ate and how much they exercised, they would lose weight.

I know you're looking to hire, and take my advice: Eastern European Au Pairs.

This reminds me of some helpful golf advice I once dispensed. If you find you practice and practice, yet your score isn't improving, your best bet is to go back and take up the game at a much younger age.

Yes. This is why shows like The Biggest Loser result in significant weight loss for the players.

A person is not obese because she eats beef instead of turkey, enjoys butter on her toast, or ate a slice of chocolate cake last Saturday. A person is obese because she consistently consumes more calories than she burns.

Being at one's ideal weight does not require restrictive dieting or hunger....unless the person is overweight and needs to lose weight to reach her ideal weight. "Diets" won't work in the long run unless they are actually a LIFESTYLE CHANGE and not a diet at all. Move more, eat smarter.

I hadn't thought about that. I thought he was suggesting I get a 20-something trophy wife.

Of course! And this is one of the few times they are unburdened by screaming children. It just makes no sense that Taxwonk's friend can go to a spin class in a hot studio, cranking his heart rate well above 80% for sustained periods of time, with a cute nanny to his right, a MILF training for a triathlon to his left, and a cougar with breast implants next to her, all three wearing tight shorts and jog bras, and he is fine. But he strolls to the park and it's lights out?

I am thinking about trying to golf left-handed. I am a righty who bats left (in baseball). Swinging things (even my crank when trying knock down liquor bottles) always feels better left-handed.

ETA: Yes, I know it's a horrible idea.
