The point is that, if you're talking about mobile computing, the iPad is a device that is too close to the iPhone and may actually fall below its feature set, and at a higher purchase* price to boot. It lacks GPS, voice, and a camera. What it gains in return is a larger screen (pro and con for a mobile device), and potentially a better keypad form factor. So his point isn't really that it sucks, but rather that the iPhone is already eating this device's lunch. | I suppose. But it seems to me that he's trying to conquer the world with iTunes. They have movies, tv, games, music, videos already. Now they're going to sell books and magazines. I think Jobs saw the Kindle and said, "Cool. How can we blow this thing out of the fucking water and sell all the other shit we have on iTunes?" This is what he came up with.

I'm really just looking at it as a Kindle that kicks ass. I don't have to switch devices to check email or surf the net or play a game or even watch a movie if I want to take a break from whatever book I'm reading (on the plane, in the waiting room, whatever). But if it sucks for reading books, what's the point? No way I spend that kind of money to have what I already have in my pocket and on my computer just 'cause it's cool. I may want it, but I don't want it that bad.

I also bet that Jobs believes this is the direction computing is going to take. he'll make it thinner and thinner, until Sidd can fold it up so he can take it with him when he takes a shit. Just like desktops are fading, laptops will be the next to go. Everyone will have some kind of cool keyboard and people will just carry their computers/iPads in their pockets and unfold them, hang 'em up and wirelessly connect to the keyboard and do what they need to do. They'll just keep making these things faster, lighter, thinner, more powerful and more portable and everyone will be playing catch-up (as usual).

 | It's about 2" bigger than the kindle each way - that's quite a bit of extra bulk. I'm happy for the extra bulk if I can really use it for doing things like taking notes at a meeting, so it is replacing a laptop, but I'm not going to accept the bulk if I'm just using it to read and generally entertain myself.

 | Integrate something like this and you wouldn't need to connect to a keyboard.

 | I agree, at least until they can plant the chip right into your brain and do away with the extraneous hardware, however thin and foldable it becomes.

 | If the battery life is anything close to the asserted 10 hours for movie viewing and games, seems like a no-brainer replacement for dvd player and portable game system. How much memory does an HD iTunes movie require?

As a Kindle substitute, it depends on relative eyestrain, but will kill Kindle for general interest magazine/newspaper subscription.

I'm glad she is more appreciative of an extra several inches for entertainment purposes.

Too obvious?

 | I'm curious to know whether/how soon/how well the tablet concept will work for design work (integration with graphic design programs in particular). Outside of potential advances there that would do away with the need for Wacom tablets, this is sort of anti-climactic to me. Of course, I have a Kindle and I'm therefore not really into another book reader.
