So, Jesse wasn't there?
Off having a schvitz with Penske, no doubt.

But you forgot EO's post about her discount designer web sites. She doesn't pay that kind of markup.

The 500% I had in mind was based on the very rough example of a $100 department store sweater (admittedly, a bit low) compared to her $500 sample sale designer sweater. That's an "extra" 500%.

Thus making it evident why you are a lawyer and not someone who works with numbers.

When you go to a fancy restaurant with your wife, do you order her the pasta and a glass of house wine because you don't want to splurge on chicken and a bottle of Chilean red?

A signature sweater I could wear for the next 5-10 years might be worth it at the original $1400 price and it's certainly worth $500.
Clothes are an investment. I have pieces I bought 10 years ago that women still stop me and ask about. I am wearing a gown next week I bought in the 90s, as it is timeless and beautifully constructed and it fits the bride's theme. (Or I may wear this new short cocktail dress I totally love because who thinks "the 30s" is an appropriate theme for a wedding.)
Having a sense of style has nothing to do with spending a lot of money on clothes, to be sure. That does not mean that it's not important to buy some killer stuff, wear them with confidence, and assemble them into a wardrobe.

I love the $6.99 shorts I got on sale from Old Navy this week. Ah, unemployment.

2. I have three or four pair of shoes I bought in 2001 that I still wear today. They were expensive, but for that kind of mileage (and they're still going), it's a bargain. Same with watches. Buy one classic design and you're done with that accessory for 20 years.
Santoni. Best shoes ever made. Fit you like a glove and never wear out.
Same goes for cars. Do it right once and get 250k out of the vehicle. These asshats flipping Escalades, Range Rovers and junk like that at 36k deserve to go bankrupt.

Eh, 500% greater than the department story price, 500% extra mark up, whatever. Close enough.

I used to help my friend Vanessa put them on all the time.
She and my neighbor Jeff, who owns a modeling agency, have pretty much convinced me that posture, fluidity in walking and the ability to let a garment hang without drawing too much attention away from the garment is the key to good model. I have none of these qualities. But Jeff fabulously compliments me all the time, so I'll live with the disappointment that I'll never be a model.
ETA: Huh. I sat next to Jesse Jackson at a charity fashion show back when the Superbowl was here. You were there?

This is one of the truly perplexing questions in life. I can't tell you how often I have sat, stunned into silent contemplation by the dilemma of how to decide whether to spend way too much money on a clothing item that will get little use based on how it looks on someone other than me if I disapprove of that other person's posture. It really makes you think.

No, not a superbowl fashion show. One back when I was young and working in politics. Chicago.

My most expensive pair of shoes are these wonderfully outlandish laquered platform ankle wraps from Dolche and Gabbana. I bought them probably six or seven years ago, and I love, love, love them. Every single time I wear them, people (mostly women, but some men) ask about them. I almost didn't get them when I saw the price tag, but my sister is a very persuasive enabler.

I have no problem with proclaiming that you really like a more expensive brand because of its styling, or because you like the prestige of owning it, but I do not believe that you are so delusional as to actually believe that the price of high-end luxury items can be fully accounted for by differences in quality. Especially high-end shoes with leather soles that wear out if you walk at all in them.
As a few examples, is a Lexus really "higher quality" than a Toyota? Nope. It has some fancier features, and may be more care (i.e., more powerful) but both are going to perform admirably. I'm all for buying the Lexus because you like it and it's fun, but don't pretend it's a "better" car.
Same for a $5000 watch versus a $500 watch. Both will last you 20 years (if for some deranged reason you are still wearing a watch 20 years from now), and both can be equally "classic" in design.
In other words, high-quality is one thing (heck, I've been known to buy Hickey Freeman suits, recognizing that I could get something similar for less), and then there is high-end.
