It is basically a cafe with an indoor play area for little children (tons of toys, toddler-sized playhouses, tables for coloring, etc.). Music and other entertainment is often provided. They charge $7.50 per child for 1.5 hours. My daughter and I went there with a buddy and his son. It was great. We got to sit and enjoy coffee and a croissant/bagel, and the kids (26 and 20 months) ran around and had a blast. We occasionally had to get up and make sure no one was hurting anyone else, etc, but it was relatively relaxing. On rainy days it is packed, and I bet it'll get even more crowded during winter.

I thought that all of this would be a great idea for an actual restaurant, but the buddy was concerned about having booze in the area (which I didn't think was a good point since Chucky Cheese has been doing it for years).

Thoughts?

I should probably post this on the Parents board.
A friend of ours tried a French Bistro w/ kids area/activities attached, and ended up shutting down the kids area because he could make more stuffing tables there. But it was nice while it lasted. There is a place near us that has a dirty, smoky bar with its floor continually sticky with beer that opens up on a big kid play space/activities center, and they've done a thriving business for years - you can have a birthday party in one room and the dads throwing beer at the TV when the Yankees come up in the other. But it's kind of WT, not sure it's the kind of place you'd see anyone from this board.

She was in one of my schools the same time I was, but I think she was abroad while I was there.

This place in Brooklyn is like that, but they also serve booze (at least wine and beer)

We have something similar here, but all I can ever think when I am there (all 2 times I've been there) is that the whole place is a giant petri dish.

Ick.

Does it do well?

And I know restaurants are a tough biz. My mom owned one for several years.

ETA: I guess my dad owned it, too. But he really just sat at the bar and drank.

Huh. I guess this is the part where I admit to not really knowing who Rachel McAdams is. I'd say she looks better as a brunette based on photographic evidence posted here to date (totally washed out in at least 2 blonde pictures posted), but that brunette picture has me thinking solely about forehead. There must be some personality thing going on that makes her so hot to you all.

Several of the local brewpubs feature play areas; nothing quite so formal (i.e., no fee per kid and no supervision or organized activities). They do very well.

The layout and the attending parents dictate whether I'll go or not. One place we tend to frequent. Another I won't go near, even though they have great beer (wayyyyyy too many oblivious parents paying no attention as their kids run back and forth from the play area, around tables, etc.).

It's been packed whenever I have gone there. My friend takes her kid there often -- apparently it has quite a few customers who are regulars. You never know how well a restaurant is actually doing, but it seems to be quite busy and popular.
