While I certainly couldn't vote for several (many?, all?) of the tea bag candidates*, I think you are misreading the landscape if you think they are all just stupid, immature, reactive, racist, etc.

The tea bag movement has captured and capitalized on the frustrations that have been building in this country since at least the mid-90s. A huge portion of the electorate is simply tired of the culture wars, your team my team environment, and greedy, moronic politicians that have served the public horribly for the last 15 years. They are at our wits end, and if that means electing a few morons to make a point, so be it.

I suspect (hope) if the newly elected crop doesn't follow through or the economy doesn't improve, we will see something similar come 2012 (with the Rs being booted out in dramatic fashion).

*I really don't see how these candidates are any worse than some of those we already have in office.
