On the other hand, if your future FIL does demolition derby, that's totally white trash. |

Any advice on conveying information about proper nutrition and portion size to a man in deep denial?
 | Give him a deck of cards. Nothing on his plate should be larger than that deck of cards, his plate should be just big enough to hold three decks. At each meal, one deck should be protein, one should be vegetable, and the third deck can be starch (but another vegetable is preferable).

Substitute carrot sticks for the popcorn, and limit snacking to fresh fruits and vegitables. That way you can eat when you are hungry, and until you are full, without loading up on calories.

I have also looked for easy ways to trim out calories, like not getting cheese or mayo (never really ate much mayo) on my sandwhich for lunch, substituting turkey breast for ham, and not getting chips or other sides (unless its carrots). It is also pretty easy to substitute ground turkey for ground beef in most recipes. And of course eating salad as a meal much more often, controlling the amount of dressing carefully.

I've found that I have learned to prefer eating this way, and, for example, when I go home to visit the parents and suddenly substitute red meat and potatoes for my usual diet that is heavier on fruit and vegitables that I can feel the difference and crave the fruit. |

Link | Neither of these pieces says much.

If you exercise you will be more hungry and will overcompensate by thinking, "I can eat more because I just burned X calories." Okay. Don't eat more.

You don't lose much more weight when you work out and change your eating habits than you do when you just change your eating habits. Okay. But if you work out, you will increase your muscle mass, which will make it seem like you're not losing much weight. The truth is, people care about losing fat. And if you work out and eat better, you will lose fat. Also, saying you won't lose that much more weight working out in combination with eating better doesn't make much sense because those extra 3 pounds on top of the 17 you would have lost eating right are probably impossible to lose with a change in diet alone.

All of this discussion about how to lose weight is pointless. It is very easy. Burn more calories than you take in. Do this by eating a more healthy diet and exercising regularly (and that means real exercise, not treadmill walking where you don't even build up a sweat).

And do you know how many Tennessee Williams flix Paul Newman was in? |

I tracked everything meticulously with a kitchen scale, worked with a nutritionist, had a trainer twice a week, worked out with a hrm to measure my intensity, and stepped on a very complicated scale every day.

I never saw as much progress as I did when I changed my diet subtly, dropped my calories lower, and stopped exercising as the result of a broken bone.

I speak from deep personal experience on both sides of the weight loss equation on this.
If you feel the need to help, send him this link . Tell him a deeply out of shape friend of yours lost a lot of weight when she followed a regimine similar to the first schedule in this link and running burns a lot of calories. He can start on October 1 and be ready by January 24. If you feel the need to give him more, tell him also to investigate http://www.sparkpeople.com or http://www.weightwatchers.com . Those two programs offer much, much more than any individual person can. | I hate running, and I don't think my knees could take it. But I have found that riding a bike, even for what I consider relatively long distances (20-35 miles), works for me. |

Why do people think situps will make their stomach look ripped? A healthy diet and cardio is the only thing that will allow you to see your abs.
