Yep. For women, situps actually tend to make the waist thicker. I think core work (not situps or ab workouts) and general good posture make for a much more pleasing female physique. And, of course, no ab/core work will make a difference whatsoever if there is a layer of fat over it. Cardio with a strong core is the best ab workout, IMHO. I am doing a core workout right now as I sit at my desk. I haven't done a situp in years. And I have enviable abs.

I also am perplexed when I see people who want to lose 30+ pounds working on the stability ball. ?????? What tiny muscle are you trying to define, and how are we going to see it through the adipose tissue? CARDIO my friends.

I am skeptical. I would like to know what "subtly" means. I would also like to know why you think 2 days a week with a trainer would lead to much.

I also don't understand what tracking everything with a kitchen scale does for you. There is no need to be meticulous. If you eat fruits and veggies primarily, with small amounts of healthy proteins and carbs, you will most assuredly be at a caloric intake level that works. If you do a real 30-60 minute work out every day, combined with that diet, you will lose a lot of weight. If you want to keep it off, eat a very healthy breakfast and lunch every day and have a sensible dinner. If you do that, you can have those days once a week or twice a month when you eat whatever the hell you want (within reason, of course).

When I broke my leg, I was strictly forbidden from doing ANY physical activity, and I worried about weight-gain, because I wouldn't have any opportunity for exercise. As a result, I was SUPER careful about what I ate, and I lost 15 pounds over about 7 or 8 weeks.

I mentioned this to my trainer (after I was cleared for physical activity), and he acknowledged (reluctantly, of course, given his line of work!) that limiting calorie-consumption is the real key to weight loss. I think this is especially true for those who are trying to lose fewer than 10 pounds.
I really only lost weight when I was eating the most I've ever eaten (about 4000-5000 calories/day). But at that time I was running 50-80 miles per week.

Now, at about 30 miles per week (with about 20 of that on the weekend), I don't eat nearly as much and am 10 lbs heavier.

ETA: I was too skinny back then, though. Almost...French.

I worked out with a trainer 2x per week (mentioned only because I had someone with me 2 hours a week pushing me hard not allowing me to slouch around the gym) and did cardio for 60-90 minutes 4 days/week with a hrm (also tracked by my trainer), and saw less progress than when I simply stopped eating carbs.

I do not recommend what worked for me for everyone, which is why I referred to it as subtle. I stopped eating carbs. I dropped my calories by maybe 100 a day when I could not exercise. Because I tracked everything, I know what worked for me and what did not. I am not guessing. I know. I know day by day my food and nutrient intake.

I lost weight and have successfully maintained it. Then I started working out again to tone, etc.

All I am saying to you is that cal in/cal out is a little more complicated than simple math.

You sounds like a crazy person to me, but whatever.

Two additional thoughts. First, (which is perhaps obvious), but your friend should avoiding eating out or ordering in. It is much easier to control what (and how much) you eat if you cook it yourself, and easier to avoid unhealthy choices if you were disciplined while at the grocery store, which is easier than being disciplined while looking at a menu.

Second, he shouldn't be thinking about it as dieting or losing weight. His goal should be to be healthy, by eating healthy and getting enough exercise, which should lead to the weight loss automatically. Your experience, as someone who seems never to have had a health need to lose weight, isn't really relevant at all.

That's crazy.
They already made a movie about this guy - it was called "Forrest Gump."

I did the "stop eating carbs" thing once and it had a dramatic effect on weight loss. I was exercising a lot at the time, but still -- it did have a huge effect. (Problem is, carbs are yummy.)

So, I'm saying, you aren't a total nut-job. Even if you really do know day by day your food and nutrient intake, which I gotta say wigs me out a bit.

That's crazy.

Okay, that's weird -- he ran 75 consecutive marathons to bring attention to the plight of single-parent families, after his wife died. What the hell did he do with his kids?

There's been articles that show that tracking what you eat will have an impact on the number of calories you consume.

I go through periods where I religiously track my food (at fitday.com) and times where I am rather lacksadasical about it.

The Return of the Vibrators

Normally, I post links to Volokh on the Politics Board, but this one deals RT's pet issue and has been discussed here. Vibrators may yet go to the U.S. Supreme Court - http://volokh.com/archives/archive_2...tml#1253032890

Dropping carbs altogether ain't exactly a subtle change. But whatever.
